My number 1 go-to Green Smoothie | This receipe helped me with bloating stress after coming back to Dubai to start school and work again.

I recently posted about my morning smoothie routine and was amazed by the amount of feedback and responses from many of you via instagram.  As promised here is the receipe.

Summer holidays are about letting go and this past summer I ate what I wanted but was fairly active so my weight gain was proportional to the amount of food and drinks I indulged in, BUT the moment I stepped back into my Dubai life, I started bloating, gaining three kilograms in weight in 10 days from just looking at food.  I could not figure out what was happening at first. I then realised, for me, there is always an underlying stress level in this fast paced Dubai lifestyle.  My cortisol levels went up, and the food and beverage choices I made, like endless cups of coffee and tea to get through the day were increasing my acidity levels in the body.  (you can check your acid/alkaline levels using pH litmus papers on Amazon.co.uk.  Spit on the litmus papers first thing in the morning).

I met a health expert earlier in the year, I remembered she said when the body gets run down and starts acting up in general, always alkalise the body first.  So I made a smoothie everyday every day before consuming any other foods, and I cut down my caffeine to one cup of tea in the morning only.  Sure enough, after three days, I released all the water retention and after 5 days I was back to my normal weight.  I also felt more energetic and much better.

I am not a nutritionist but this green smoothie is utterly delicious and drinkable.  I also drink it around 4pm again on an empty stomach.  I prefer a smoothie to a juice because it keeps all the fibre allowing the body to absorb it slowly.

Also, by blending the foods below, it helps to extract more of the minerals and other nutrients held with in the cell walls.  This allows the body to be fed with all the goodness as efficiently as possible.

The receipe is from Kimberly Synder’s The Beauty Detox Foods.

2 cups of very cold, filtered water

7 cups of chopped spinach (about a medium bunch)

6 cups of chopped romaine lettuce

1 cup of celery (about two stalks)

1 apple cored and chopped

1 pear, cored and chopped

1 banana

2 Tbs. fresh lemon juice.

I have two glasses in the morning on an empty stomach and again at 4pm.  This helps the body to stay more alkaline when I choose to have more acidic foods during the day and the fibre helps to cleanse the body.  It is best to blend using a Vitamix or other high speed blenders to create a smooth consistency (no one wants lumpy spinach in their smoothie).  You can make it in the afternoon if you have early morning starts – you just need to shake it well, and it lasts in the fridge for 2 days.  Otherwise, you can always make a larger batch to freeze.

I started with 16oz and worked my way up to 24oz.

Top tip: Add the greens first and fruits later as they need more time in the Vitamix.
